This post details the key development papers regarding the Revised Hammersmith Scale for SMA (RHS) in addition to its manual and testing proforma. If you are transitioning between use of the HFMS/HFMSE and the RHS we would recommend use of the joint RHS/HFMSE* testing proforma for at least one session prior to using the RHS alone, that way you will get smooth transition of scores to enable ease of comparison with previous assessments without compromising longitudinal data collection. If you have not used the Hammersmith Scale previously we would recommend using the RHS proforma from the outset.

*Using the combined RHS/HFMSE testing form (page 44 of the RHS manual) - the form is set out in the order of the RHS, underneath the RHS item is the corresponding HFMSE item, this is so that the patient will only do one activity whilst you score it in according the the RHS or HFMSE scoring criteria. This does not add any additional burden to the patient or any additional time on the assessment. By using this form you can derive and HFMS, HFMSE, RHS and WHO motor milestone score. The number of the HFMSE item is denoted in the HFMSE scoring column, to score the HFMS use only HFMSE items 1-20. Please refer to page 40 of the RHS manual for further details.
